# First-Attempt Delivery Rate, Japan Post

> First-Attempt Delivery Rate for Japan Post stores. Tracked live in Vortex IQ Nerve Centre. How to read it, why it matters, and how to act on it.

**Metrics type:** [Supporting Metrics](/nerve-centre/overview#metrics-types-explained) • **Category:** [Delivery Performance](/nerve-centre/connectors#connectors-by-type)

## At a glance

> Share of Japan Post consignments delivered on the very first attempt over the trailing 30 days, before any recipient-absent redelivery. A high rate means parcels are reaching addressees first time; a low rate means the network is burning attempts on redeliveries, which adds transit days and cost. The card alerts below 85 percent.

## What it tracks

The card computes `first_attempt_delivered ÷ total_delivered` over the rolling 30 days, reading each consignment's tracking-event stream and scoring 1 only when the first delivery attempt produced a delivered scan with no intervening recipient-absent (ご不在) event. On Japan Post's domestic Yu-Pack network the first-attempt picture is shaped by Japan's household pattern: many urban recipients are out during the day, so a first attempt often fails and the parcel routes into Japan Post's redelivery machinery (the Yubin app, a timed redelivery window, or Konbini convenience-store and locker pickup). That redelivery still reaches the customer, but it does not count here: this card only rewards the first knock. A reading comfortably above 85 percent usually means recipients are choosing locker or convenience-store collection at checkout, or that the merchant ships to a metro mix with high daytime occupancy. A dip below 85 percent points at an address-quality problem, a service mix skewed to attended home delivery, or a seasonal absence spike (Obon in August, the Oshogatsu New Year window). Read it next to [On-Time Delivery Rate](/nerve-centre/kpi-cards/japan-post/on-time-delivery-rate), since each failed first attempt adds a redelivery cycle that pushes transit days out, and next to [Exception Rate](/nerve-centre/kpi-cards/japan-post/exception-rate), where the recipient-absent events surface. The 30-day window smooths the day-of-week swing in household occupancy.

## Reconciling against the source

Reconcile against the per-consignment attempt history on the Japan Post Tracking Result Inquiry (お荷物追跡), where a recipient-absent (ご不在) event before the delivered scan marks a missed first attempt; allow for tracking-event ingestion lag (around 30 minutes to 4 hours) and note that scan timestamps are carrier-local (JST), so an evening redelivery can land on the next calendar day in the portal.
