# Refund Volume, Klarna

> Refund Volume for Klarna stores. Tracked live in Vortex IQ Nerve Centre. How to read it, why it matters, and how to act on it.

**Metrics type:** [Supporting Metrics](/nerve-centre/overview#metrics-types-explained) • **Category:** [Payment Gateway](/nerve-centre/connectors#connectors-by-type)

## At a glance

> Total refund dollars on Klarna BNPL orders. Klarna debits this from merchant's pending payout balance (or invoices the merchant if balance insufficient).

| | |
| ------------------ | ---------------------------------------------- |
| **What it counts** | `SUM(refund.amount)` per period, per currency. |
| **Time window** | `30D vsP`. |
| **Alert trigger** | `+25% vsP`. |
| **Roles** | owner, finance |

## Calculation

Calculated automatically from your Klarna data. See the At a glance summary above for what the metric tracks and the worked example below for a typical reading.

## Worked example

"Helle Mode" 30 days. Total Klarna refund volume EUR 107,500 + GBP 4,800. Pay in 4 contributes EUR 32,200 (the largest absolute share due to elevated return rate plus volume). Helle Mode net Klarna revenue after refunds: EUR 937,400 + GBP 47,000.

## Sibling cards merchants should reference together

| Card | Why pair it |
| --------------------------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------- |
| [`kla_refund_rate`](/nerve-centre/kpi-cards/klarna-api/refund-rate) | Rate; dollars divided by revenue. |
| [`kla_total_volume`](/nerve-centre/kpi-cards/klarna-api/total-volume) | Gross; subtract this for net. |

## Reconciling against the vendor's own dashboard

**Where to look:**

[portal.klarna.com](https://portal.klarna.com) → **Refunds**.

**Why differ:**

| Reason | Direction | Why |
| ------------- | ----------------- | ------------ |
| **Time zone** | Boundary days off | CEST vs UTC. |

## Known limitations / merchant FAQs

**Refund volume larger than payout, how does Klarna handle?**
Klarna debits merchant's pending payout balance first. If insufficient, Klarna invoices the merchant for the gap.

**Partial refund supported?**
Yes; any amount up to original via API.

**Klarna processing fee on refund?**
Small fee (typically EUR 0.10 to EUR 0.30 per refund); the original merchant fee on the sale is generally not refunded.
