# Top Decline Reasons, Klarna

> Top Decline Reasons for Klarna stores. Tracked live in Vortex IQ Nerve Centre. How to read it, why it matters, and how to act on it.

**Metrics type:** [Supporting Metrics](/nerve-centre/overview#metrics-types-explained) • **Category:** [Payment Gateway](/nerve-centre/connectors#connectors-by-type)

## At a glance

> Top reasons Klarna's underwriting declined customers, ranked. Klarna's decline reason codes are anonymised vs card-network codes (consumer credit privacy); broad categories only.

| | |
| ------------------ | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **What it counts** | `GROUP BY decline_reason` for `status = REJECTED`. Klarna categories: `INSUFFICIENT_DATA` (thin file), `EXISTING_DEBT` (customer over-extended), `ADDRESS_VERIFICATION` (address mismatch), `FRAUD_FLAG`, `MAX_AMOUNT_EXCEEDED`. |
| **Time window** | `7D`. |
| **Roles** | owner, operations |

## Calculation

Calculated automatically from your Klarna data. See the At a glance summary above for what the metric tracks and the worked example below for a typical reading.

## Worked example

"Helle Mode" 7-day Klarna decline breakdown.

| Reason | Count | Share | Action |
| ------------------------------ | ----- | ----- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| INSUFFICIENT\_DATA (thin file) | 58 | 35.6% | Customer too new to Klarna or no credit history. No fix; suggest card fallback. |
| EXISTING\_DEBT (over-extended) | 41 | 25.2% | Customer has open Klarna balances elsewhere. No fix. |
| ADDRESS\_VERIFICATION | 28 | 17.2% | Address mismatch. Improve checkout autofill / address validation. |
| FRAUD\_FLAG | 18 | 11.0% | Klarna risk model flagged. No appeal; legitimate fraud-prevention. |
| MAX\_AMOUNT\_EXCEEDED | 13 | 8.0% | Customer exceeded Klarna purchase limit. |
| OTHER | 5 | 3.0% | Misc edge cases. |

What the merchant should notice:

1. **Address verification at 17% is the only actionable category.** Improve checkout address validation (Google Address Autofill, Loqate); recover roughly 60-70% of these.
2. **Insufficient data + Existing debt = 60% of declines.** Both customer-side; no merchant fix.
3. **Fraud flag at 11% is low (good).** Above 20% suggests merchant attracts higher-fraud-risk traffic.

## Sibling cards merchants should reference together

| Card | Why pair it |
| ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------ |
| [`kla_decline_rate`](/nerve-centre/kpi-cards/klarna-api/decline-rate) | Aggregate; this is the breakdown. |
| [`kla_success_rate`](/nerve-centre/kpi-cards/klarna-api/success-rate) | Complement. |
| [`kla_top_payment_methods`](/nerve-centre/kpi-cards/klarna-api/top-payment-methods) | Slice it has different decline-reason mix. |

## Reconciling against the vendor's own dashboard

**Where to look:**

Klarna does not publicly expose per-decline-reason breakdowns due to consumer-credit privacy. The Merchant Portal aggregates into broad categories.

**Why our number may differ:**

| Reason | Direction | Why |
| ------------------ | ----------------- | ------------------------------------------------------ |
| **Reason mapping** | Either | Klarna anonymises reasons; we map to broad categories. |
| **Time zone** | Boundary days off | CEST vs UTC. |

## Known limitations / merchant FAQs

**Why are reasons so vague?**
Consumer-credit-privacy regulation. Klarna cannot disclose specific risk signals to the merchant.

**Address verification, can I improve it?**
Yes. Implement Google Address Autofill, Loqate, or similar; clean addresses recover 60-70% of these.

**Existing debt, anything I can do?**
No. The customer has open Klarna balances elsewhere. They need to settle before increasing exposure.

**Fraud flag at 5% suddenly jumped to 25%, what gives?**
Targeted fraud attempt at the merchant. Klarna's risk model caught it. The merchant should review web traffic for campaign anomalies.

**Slice it has a unique decline reason?**
Yes: SLICE\_IT\_CREDIT\_CHECK\_FAILED. Customer chose Slice it but didn't pass the harder credit check. They can retry with Pay in 4 or Pay in 30.
