# Volume Trend, Klarna

> Volume Trend for Klarna stores. Tracked live in Vortex IQ Nerve Centre. How to read it, why it matters, and how to act on it.

**Metrics type:** [Supporting Metrics](/nerve-centre/overview#metrics-types-explained) • **Category:** [Payment Gateway](/nerve-centre/connectors#connectors-by-type)

## At a glance

> Daily Klarna captured volume across the period. Time-series view of [`kla_total_volume`](/nerve-centre/kpi-cards/klarna-api/total-volume). Reveals payday-cycle spikes (Pay-in-30-days customers buy at the end of one month, due in the next), seasonal fashion patterns (Helle Mode's biggest Klarna days are around the 25th when German payday lands), and Klarna in-app catalogue feature-promotion days.

| | |
| --------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **What it counts** | Daily `SUM(order_amount.value)` for `status = CAPTURED`, grouped by capture date. |
| **Currency** | Per-currency, not FX-converted. |
| **Refunds / disputes / declined** | Excluded. |
| **Pay in 30 days payday spike** | German Pay-in-30 customers cluster around payday (typically 25th-28th of month for monthly-paid Germans). Trend shows weekly bumps. |
| **Klarna campaign days** | Klarna runs in-app promotional days (Klarna Day, seasonal sales); merchant volume can spike 2-5x on those days for participating brands. |
| **Time window** | `30D vsP`. |
| **Alert trigger** | `drop >15% vsP`. |
| **Roles** | owner, finance |

## Calculation

Calculated automatically from your Klarna data. See the At a glance summary above for what the metric tracks and the worked example below for a typical reading.

## Worked example

"Helle Mode" Klarna daily volume, last 7 days ending 02 May 26.

| Date | Volume EUR | Notes |
| ------------- | ---------- | ---------------------------------- |
| Mon 27 Apr 26 | 28,400 | Mid-week baseline |
| Tue 28 Apr 26 | 31,200 | Continued |
| Wed 29 Apr 26 | 29,800 | |
| Thu 30 Apr 26 | 47,600 | End-of-month payday cluster begins |
| Fri 01 May 26 | 52,800 | Payday peak |
| Sat 02 May 26 | 38,400 | Tailing |

What the merchant should notice:

1. **Thursday-Friday end-of-month spike of 60-80% over baseline.** German monthly-paid workers receive salary on the last business day; Pay-in-30-days purchases cluster post-payday. This is the signature Klarna pattern.
2. **Saturday and Sunday lower for Klarna than for cards.** Klarna is more "considered purchase" than impulse-card; weekend mobile-impulse buyers index higher on cards.
3. **Klarna Day campaigns (typically biannual) can spike a single day 3-5x baseline.** Helle Mode should track whether they participated.
4. **A 15% drop in 7-day rolling window triggers alert.** Common cause: Klarna placement in checkout was de-emphasised (a UX experiment moved Klarna below the fold), or competitive BNPL added (Afterpay or Klarna's biggest competitor in-market).

## Sibling cards merchants should reference together

| Card | Why pair it |
| --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------ |
| [`kla_total_volume`](/nerve-centre/kpi-cards/klarna-api/total-volume) | Period aggregate. |
| [`kla_total_transactions`](/nerve-centre/kpi-cards/klarna-api/total-transactions) | Daily count alongside volume. |
| [`kla_decline_rate`](/nerve-centre/kpi-cards/klarna-api/decline-rate) | Decline spikes precede volume drops. |
| Stripe [`stripe_revenue_trend`](/nerve-centre/kpi-cards/stripe/revenue-over-time) | Cross-rail trend comparison. |

## Reconciling against the vendor's own dashboard

**Where to look:**

[portal.klarna.com](https://portal.klarna.com) → **Reports → Sales** with daily granularity.

**Why our number may differ:**

| Reason | Direction | Why |
| -------------------------------------- | ----------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Time zone** | Boundary days off | CEST vs UTC. |
| **Capture date vs authorisation date** | Either | Klarna lets merchants delay capture up to 28 days for Pay in 30. |

**Cross-connector reconciliation:**

| Comparison | Expected | Why |
| ---------------------------------------------------- | ------------ | ------------------------------------- |
| `kla_volume_trend` ↔ commerce-platform daily revenue | Klarna share | Other payment methods carry the rest. |

## Known limitations / merchant FAQs

**Why does my Klarna trend lag my card-trend by 1-2 days?**
Klarna's authorisation can be days before capture (merchants typically capture on shipment). Card flow is auth-and-capture immediate. The Klarna trend therefore drifts later; for retailers shipping next day, the gap is 1 day.

**End-of-month spike, German pattern only?**
Strongest in DE/AT/NL where monthly payday is dominant. UK/US shows weaker spike (biweekly/semi-monthly payroll dominates).

**Klarna Day campaigns, when?**
Typically biannual (spring + autumn). Klarna communicates dates to participating merchants; brands not in the catalogue still see indirect lift.

**Single day at 5x baseline, what causes?**
(1) Klarna in-app feature promotion (your products surfaced to 150M+ users), (2) merchant-side flash sale, (3) influencer pushing Klarna-paid checkout. Cross-check with marketing calendar.

**Holiday volume zero, Klarna issue?**
Unlikely. Klarna operates 24/7. More commonly the merchant's commerce platform was down or paused.

**Year-over-year, Klarna penetration grows?**
Yes typically. Klarna market share in DE/UK/US grew 15-25% YoY through 2024-2025; Klarna share of merchant revenue typically rises with platform maturity.

**Klarna NYSE listing 2025, trend impact?**
None. Operations unchanged; trend reflects merchant-side and customer-side dynamics only.
