# Avg Time to Convert, Mixpanel

> Avg Time to Convert for Mixpanel stores. Tracked live in Vortex IQ Nerve Centre. How to read it, why it matters, and how to act on it.

**Card class:** [Non-Hero](/nerve-centre/overview#card-classes-explained) • **Category:** [Funnels](/nerve-centre/connectors#connectors-by-type)

## At a glance

> **Avg Time to Convert** is the average elapsed time between a user entering your primary Mixpanel funnel and completing it. Mixpanel's funnel reports record the timestamp of each step, so this value is the mean of the entry-to-conversion gap across everyone who finished inside the conversion window. A short, stable time usually means a frictionless path; a lengthening time often means a step has become harder, a price is causing hesitation, or shoppers are leaving to compare and returning later. Reading it alongside step drop-off tells you whether your funnel loses people or simply slows them down.

| | |
| --------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **What it counts** | The mean time from the first funnel step to the conversion step, averaged across all users who converted within the funnel's conversion window. |
| **Sample type** | Backend API data from Mixpanel funnel reports, which carry the timestamp of each completed step. |
| **Why it matters** | Time to convert is a sensitive read on friction. It can move before conversion rate does, giving you an early warning that the path is getting harder. |
| **Reading the value** | The card shows an average duration. Compare it against the prior period; rising time with flat conversion means slowing momentum, while falling time usually signals a smoother path. |
| **Currency** | count |
| **Time window** | `30D vsP` |
| **Alert trigger** | `-` |
| **Sentiment key** | `mix_funnel_time_to_convert` |

## Calculation

Vortex IQ reads your primary funnel from Mixpanel and takes the average of the elapsed time between the entry step and the conversion step for every user who completed the funnel inside its conversion window. Users who never converted are excluded, since they have no end timestamp. The figure is a mean across the selected period and is compared against the prior equivalent period so you can see whether the path is speeding up or slowing down. Because it is an average, a handful of very slow converters can pull it upward, which is why it reads best next to the funnel's conversion rate and step drop-off.

## Worked example

*A representative reading of **Avg Time to Convert** for a typical merchant on Mixpanel.* Imagine your purchase funnel runs Product Viewed, Add to Cart, Checkout Started, Order Completed, with a 7-day conversion window. Over the trailing 30 days the average time to convert sits at about 14 minutes. After a redesign ships on 14 Jun 26, the next reading climbs to roughly 22 minutes while overall conversion holds steady. The slowdown points to a new step in checkout rather than lost shoppers. You open the funnel in Mixpanel, see the gap concentrated between Checkout Started and Order Completed, and find a newly added address-validation screen adding friction. For deeper investigation, use Vortex Mind to trace upstream causes; for natural-language exploration, ask Ask Viq.

## Sibling cards merchants should reference together

| Card | Why merchants reach for it |
| ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| [`mix_funnel_conversion`](/nerve-centre/kpi-cards/mixpanel/primary-funnel-conversion) | The headline conversion rate for the same funnel. Pair it with timing to separate lost users from slow users. |
| [`mix_funnel_dropoff`](/nerve-centre/kpi-cards/mixpanel/biggest-funnel-step-drop-off) | Pinpoints the step where most people leave, which is often where time also stretches out. |
| [`mix_flows_conversion_path_share`](/nerve-centre/kpi-cards/mixpanel/conversion-path-share) | Shows which routes convert, useful when a slow average hides one long path. |
| [`mix_funnel_conversion_by_segment`](/nerve-centre/kpi-cards/mixpanel/session-conversion-rate) | Breaks conversion down by segment so you can see who converts fast and who lags. |
| [`mix_cart_abandonment_rate`](/nerve-centre/kpi-cards/mixpanel/cart-abandonment-rate) | A long time to convert often coincides with abandonment; read them together for checkout friction. |

## Reconciling against Mixpanel

**Where to look in Mixpanel's own dashboard:**

Open your primary funnel report in Mixpanel and switch on the time-to-convert view, which shows the mean and median duration between steps. Set the date range to the last 30 days and confirm the conversion window matches the one Vortex IQ uses. The overall entry-to-conversion average should line up with the card; the per-step breakdown tells you where the time is being spent.

**Why the Vortex IQ value may legitimately differ:**

| Reason | Direction | What to do |
| ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Conversion window length.** A longer window lets slow converters count, raising the average. | Vortex IQ may read higher or lower | Match the window used in the Mixpanel funnel before comparing. |
| **Mean versus median.** Mixpanel can show both; a few very slow users skew the mean upward. | Vortex IQ mean reads higher than median | Check the median in Mixpanel to judge the typical shopper. |
| **Step definition.** A changed entry or conversion event shifts what is being measured. | Variable | Confirm both funnels use the same first and last steps. |

**Cross-connector reconciliation:** if time to convert lengthened but your ecommerce platform shows steady checkout speed, the gap is likely a tracking or step-definition difference rather than a real slowdown. For divergence investigations, use Vortex Mind.

## Known limitations / merchant FAQs

**Q: How often does Avg Time to Convert update?**
It refreshes on the Nerve Centre's normal cadence over a trailing 30-day window and is compared against the prior period. Because it only counts users who converted, very low funnel volume can make the average jumpy.

**Q: Why does the average look so much higher than my typical shopper's experience?**
Averages are pulled upward by a small number of people who convert days later. If the mean feels unrepresentative, check the median in Mixpanel, which describes the middle shopper more faithfully.

**Q: Does an abandoned funnel count toward the time?**
No. Users who never reach the conversion step have no end timestamp and are excluded, so this metric describes only the journeys that finished.

**Q: Can I customise the alert threshold?**
This card has no alert by default, but you can configure thresholds and the comparison window per profile in the Sensitivity tab if you want to be notified when the average time to convert moves beyond a set range.
