# Active Shopping Pins on Out-of-Stock SKUs, Pinterest Ads

How to read it:

1. **Two SKUs are leaking £305 over 72 hours.** The ochre armchair and brass lamp are both sold out in Shopify but their Shopping Pins are still live and spending. Every click lands on a sold-out page, so the spend is pure waste and the Pinner experience is poor.
2. **The Pin is the SKU.** There is no clever bid adjustment that fixes this. The only remedy is to stop the SKU serving: pause the Pin or mark it unavailable in the feed. On Pinterest Shopping the product and the ad are one object.
3. **Catalogue sync lag is the usual cause.** The armchair likely sold out shortly after the last feed sync. Until the next sync propagates the zero quantity, Pinterest believes it is buyable. This card does not wait for the feed; it reads live inventory from the commerce connector.
4. **Recover, do not just pause.** Reallocate the £305 to in-stock catalogue Pins that are converting. When the armchair restocks, re-enable its Pin. The card will clear the row automatically once inventory returns or the Pin is paused.

Quick triage:

* SKU at zero + Pin active + spending = pause immediately, recover budget.
* SKU at zero + Pin active + not spending = lower priority, but still mark unavailable to protect the Pinner experience.
* SKU low but not zero = not flagged here; watch it if it is a fast seller.

## Reconciling against Pinterest Ads Manager

**Where to look in Pinterest Ads Manager:**

[Pinterest Ads Manager > Catalogs](https://ads.pinterest.com/advertiser/) > the product groups and feed status view shows which products are eligible to serve as Shopping Pins. Pinterest shows feed-reported availability, which is only as fresh as your last feed sync, so a product can read in stock here while it is actually sold out in your store. To see active spend per product, cross-reference [Reporting > Performance](https://ads.pinterest.com/advertiser/reporting/performance/) at the product or Pin level. This card's advantage is that it reads live commerce inventory, not the feed snapshot Pinterest holds.

**Why our number may legitimately differ from Pinterest's UI:**

## Known limitations / merchant FAQs

**Why does Pinterest keep serving a Pin for a sold-out product?**
Because Pinterest's view of availability comes from your product feed, which syncs on a schedule rather than in real time. When a SKU sells out between feed syncs, Pinterest still believes it is buyable and keeps the Shopping Pin live and spending until the next sync, sometimes longer if the feed itself is stale. This card reads live inventory from your commerce platform, so it catches the gap that the feed schedule leaves open.

**Why can I not just lower the bid on the out-of-stock Pin?**
Because on Pinterest Shopping the Pin and the SKU are the same object. There is no keyword or separate ad to throttle independently of the product. The only effective remedies are to pause the Pin or mark the SKU unavailable in the feed so Pinterest stops serving it.

**How fast does the card catch a stockout?**
It evaluates continuously against the latest inventory from your commerce connector, so it typically flags an active spending Pin on a zero-quantity SKU within a refresh window, well before the product feed would have propagated the change to Pinterest.

**Should I pause the Pin or fix the feed?**
For an immediate leak, pause the Pin, it stops spend now. To prevent recurrence, also make sure the feed reflects availability promptly so Pinterest stops serving sold-out products on its own. The best setup is a frequent, accurate feed plus this card as the safety net for the gaps between syncs.

**What about a product that is out of stock but restocking tomorrow?**
You can pause and re-enable, or leave the Pin and accept a small leak if restock is imminent and you want to keep the Pin's accumulated engagement. The card shows recent spend per Pin so you can weigh the leak against the restock timing. For anything more than a day out, pause and recover the budget.

**Does this handle variants, like one size sold out but others in stock?**
Partial availability depends on how your feed maps product variants to Pins. If variants are separate catalogue entries, the card flags only the sold-out variant's Pin. If the feed maps a whole product to one Pin, availability is judged at that level. Match your feed granularity to how you want variant stockouts handled.
