Card class: SensitivityCategory: Inventory Forecasting

At a glance

Cash sitting in Amazon’s warehouses that cannot be sold. Stranded inventory is stock you physically hold in FBA but which has no active, buyable listing: the offer is suppressed, inactive, missing a buy option, or otherwise blocked. You are paying storage on it, it counts toward your inventory limits, and it earns nothing. This card values that trapped stock so an owner, operations lead, or finance owner can see the size of the problem in money, not just a SKU count.
What it countsThe total value of FBA units that are in stock but not sellable because the listing is suppressed, inactive, or otherwise has no active buy option. Amazon’s own term is stranded inventory.
Valuation basisUnits times a per-unit value (cost or price basis depending on configuration). The card surfaces the trapped capital, not a sales figure.
Common causesA suppressed listing (missing required attribute, image, or compliance flag), a closed or inactive listing with stock still in the warehouse, a pricing error that removed the buy option, or a catalogue mismatch after an ASIN change.
Why it mattersStranded units pay storage fees, count against FBA storage limits, and head toward long-term storage surcharges, all while generating zero revenue. It is the most wasteful inventory state on Amazon.
Relationship to suppressionsClosely tied to Suppressed Listings and New Suppressions (24h). A new suppression on an ASIN with FBA stock immediately strands that stock.

Calculation

Calculated automatically from your Amazon Seller Central data. See the At a glance summary above for what the metric tracks and the worked example below for a typical reading.

Worked example

A UK accessories brand on FBA. Snapshot taken 14 Mar 26.
ASINWhy strandedUnitsPer-unit valueStranded value
B0XXXX1Suppressed: missing compliance attribute140£9£1,260
B0XXXX2Listing inactive after price error60£14£840
B0XXXX3Catalogue mismatch after variation change95£6£570
Stranded Inventory Value (this card)295£2,670
Card value = £2,670 of trapped stock
Alert threshold = £1k → card raised
Largest single cause = B0XXXX1 suppression (£1,260, 47% of the total)
Three things to notice:
  1. One suppression is almost half the problem. B0XXXX1 alone is £1,260 of the £2,670. Stranded value is usually concentrated, so fixing the one or two largest causes clears most of the trapped cash. Work the list by value, not by unit count.
  2. Each cause has a different fix. The suppressed ASIN needs the missing compliance attribute supplied; the inactive listing needs the price corrected and the offer re-activated; the catalogue mismatch needs the variation relationship repaired. This is not a single action, it is a triage queue.
  3. The clock is running. Every day these 295 units sit, they accrue storage fees (FBA Storage Fees) and edge toward the long-term storage surcharge (ASINs Approaching Long-Term Storage). Reactivate fast, or remove the stock if the listing cannot be fixed.
With £2,670 trapped, the card is raised (>$1k). The action: fix the suppression and pricing issues to reactivate the listings, repair the catalogue mismatch, and if any ASIN cannot be made sellable, create a removal order before storage and long-term fees compound the loss.

Sibling cards merchants should reference together

Stranded value is a symptom. These cards point to the cause and the cost:
CardWhy pair it with Stranded Inventory Value
Suppressed ListingsThe most common cause of stranded stock. A suppressed listing with FBA inventory strands it instantly.
New Suppressions (24h)The leading indicator. A new suppression on a stocked ASIN will appear here as new stranded value within a day.
Inactive ListingsInactive listings with warehouse stock are stranded. This card lists them; that one explains why they went inactive.
FBA Storage FeesThe ongoing cost of holding stranded stock. Stranded units keep paying storage while earning nothing.
ASINs Approaching Long-Term StorageWhere stranded stock ends up if it is not reactivated or removed: the long-term surcharge.
New Suppressions (24h)Catch the suppression early and you prevent the stranding before it costs anything.

Reconciling against Amazon Seller Central

Where to look in Seller Central: The closest Amazon-native view is:
Seller Central → Inventory → FBA Inventory → Fix Stranded Inventory (the dedicated stranded-inventory tool). This lists every stranded ASIN, the reason, and the recommended action (reactivate or create a removal order).
The card’s value is the money equivalent of that list. Amazon shows the units and reasons; this card multiplies units by a per-unit value so the impact is visible in currency. Timing and reporting-lag table:
TopicDetail
Detection lagAmazon flags inventory as stranded a short while after the listing problem occurs, not instantly. A brand-new suppression may take a little time before its stock shows as stranded.
Valuation basisThe card values units at a cost or price basis. Amazon’s own tool shows units and estimated value; the exact figures will be in the same range but may not match to the penny.
Reactivation lagAfter you fix a listing, it can take Amazon a short period to clear the stranded flag and re-publish the offer. The card follows once Amazon updates.
Removal in progressUnits you have requested for removal may still show until the removal completes.
Why our number may legitimately differ from Seller Central:
ReasonDirectionWhy
Valuation basisDiffers in figureThe card multiplies units by a per-unit value; Amazon’s tool may use a different value basis. Unit counts should agree closely; the money figure may not.
Detection timingBoth lag slightlyStranding is flagged after the listing event, so a very recent suppression may be on this card or Amazon’s tool but not yet both.
Removal-in-progress unitsOurs can be higherUnits requested for removal may still count as stranded until the removal completes.
Cross-connector reconciliation:
CardExpected relationshipWhat causes legitimate divergence
Other-channel inventory valueSame physical units, different sellability. Stock that is stranded on Amazon may still be perfectly sellable on another channel if you hold separate inventory there.Stranded value is an Amazon-specific sellability problem. The same SKU may be healthy on Shopify or eBay; the stranding is about the Amazon listing state, not the product.

Known limitations / merchant FAQs

What exactly makes inventory “stranded”? The units are physically in FBA but there is no active, buyable offer attached to them. The most common reasons are a suppressed listing (missing attribute, image, or compliance flag), an inactive or closed listing, or a pricing error that removed the buy option. The stock exists; the listing does not let anyone buy it. How is the value calculated? Units times a per-unit value. It is meant to size the trapped capital in money so finance can prioritise. The exact figure depends on the value basis configured and may not match Amazon’s own estimate to the penny, though the unit counts should agree. Why is this worse than just slow-moving stock? Slow-moving stock can still sell. Stranded stock cannot sell at all in its current state, while still paying storage, counting against your storage limits, and heading toward long-term surcharges. It is the least productive inventory state on Amazon. I fixed the listing but the value is still showing. Why? There is a short reactivation lag after you fix the issue before Amazon clears the stranded flag and re-publishes the offer. The card follows Amazon once the offer is live again. If it persists, confirm in the Fix Stranded Inventory tool that the fix was accepted. What should I do first? Work the list by value. Reactivate the largest-value listings by supplying the missing attribute or correcting the price, repair any catalogue mismatches, and for anything that cannot be made sellable, create a removal order before FBA Storage Fees and the long-term surcharge compound the loss.
