Calculation

Calculated automatically from your Square data. See the At a glance summary above for what the metric tracks and the worked example below for a typical reading.

Worked example

The bookshop, snapshot 02 May 26:
Last payout       = 02 May 26 02:00 CT
Now               = 02 May 26 16:00 CT
Payout age        = 0.6 days

Healthy. T+1 schedule, deposit landed at 02:00, today's volume in flight for tomorrow.
A merchant with payout age of 5 days on a Tuesday would be unusual: the previous Thursday was the last payout, suggesting Friday Saturday Sunday Monday Tuesday all had no payout, which means either schedule was paused or no volume was available to deposit.

Reconciling against the vendor’s own dashboard

Where to look in the Square Dashboard:
Balance → All deposits with newest-first sort. Compare top-row date to today.
Common divergences: time-zone (your account’s vs UTC). Cross-connector reconciliation: payout age varies per PSP; Stripe defaults to T+2, Square to T+1, so even healthy multi-rail merchants see different ages. Compare each rail to its own benchmark.

Known limitations / merchant FAQs

“Payout age of 4 on a Tuesday morning, normal?” Possibly. Friday’s payout (T+1 from Thursday) lands Friday 02:00. Saturday + Sunday no payouts (banking weekend). Monday’s payout (T+1 from Friday) lands Monday 02:00. So Tuesday morning’s “age” reads ~1 day. If you’re seeing 4 days, something changed. “Bank holiday impact?” US: Federal Reserve holidays close ACH (typically 10, 11 days/year). UK: bank holidays close BACS / FPS. EU: per-country bank holidays. Square’s payout pauses through these, age increases by the holiday count. “Why might Square pause my payouts?” Risk review (sudden volume surge, dispute spike, suspicious activity), bank-account verification issue (closed bank account at your end), or an active fraud investigation. “Same-day Instant Deposit, does that reset age?” Yes; Instant Deposit creates a payout record. Age resets to <1 day after each Instant Deposit. “Multi-currency?” Per-currency age (a USD-only stream may be on T+1; a GBP stream on T+2). “Closed bank account, what happens?” Square retains the funds, blocks payouts; merchant must update banking details before payouts resume. Age grows daily until resolved.
