Calculation
Calculated automatically from your Square data. See the At a glance summary above for what the metric tracks and the worked example below for a typical reading.Worked example
30-day Austin bookshop tender mix:| Tender | Count | % of count | Volume share |
|---|---|---|---|
| Contactless tap (CARD) | 2,420 | 42.8% | USD 55,800 |
| Chip + PIN (CARD) | 980 | 17.3% | USD 22,600 |
| Cash | 1,180 | 20.9% | USD 14,200 |
| Square Online (EXTERNAL, card) | 612 | 10.8% | USD 21,300 |
| Apple/Google Pay (WALLET, POS) | 240 | 4.2% | USD 5,200 |
| Cash App Pay | 88 | 1.6% | USD 2,940 |
| Magstripe swipe | 20 | 0.4% | USD 460 |
| Tap to Pay on iPhone | 95 | 1.7% | USD 2,180 |
| Manual entry (Virtual Terminal) | 14 | 0.2% | USD 4,800 |
- Tap is now the dominant tender at 43%. US contactless adoption was <20% in 2019; mid-60s as of 2026. Merchants who haven’t enabled NFC leave material conversion behind.
- Magstripe share at 0.4% is healthy. Anything <1% is normal residual; >5% means the chip reader has a fault.
- Cash at 21% is high for ecom-led brand but normal for a bookshop. Books are low-margin walk-in tender.
- Cash App Pay at 1.6% of count, 2.3% of online volume. In younger demographics it can hit 10, 15% of online volume.
- Tap to Pay on iPhone at 1.7% is emerging tender; for sole proprietors at markets this is meaningful new revenue.

Known limitations / merchant FAQs
“Why is contactless not 100% of my tap-eligible transactions?” Some customers still prefer chip + PIN (older demographics, perceived security). Some banks issue cards without NFC. Some carriers’ cases interfere with the NFC antenna. “How do I push customers toward Apple Pay / Google Pay?” Express checkout buttons on Square Online, Apple Pay-first promo at the till. Wallet adoption has secular growth. “Cash App Pay only US, will my international customers see it?” Cash App Pay is US-first (with limited UK pilot). Non-US shoppers won’t see it. “Square Gift Cards, are they a tender here?” Yes; gift card redemptions appear assource_type = GIFT_CARD. Merchants with gift programs see 5, 15% of holiday volume on this rail.
“Magstripe at 8%, what’s wrong?”
Either chip reader hardware fault (replace it) or the cashier defaulting to swipe out of habit. Run a 1-week reader-status check via Square Dashboard’s Devices view.
“Tap to Pay on iPhone, does it count as POS or as Online?”
POS card-present (source_type = CARD, entry_method = CONTACTLESS).
“Multi-location, does the mix vary by location?”
Yes, hugely. A flagship downtown store sees more wallet + tap; a suburban store sees more chip + cash.
“Manual entry / Virtual Terminal at 0.2%, what’s that?”
Phone orders entered by the cashier into Square Virtual Terminal. High decline rate due to absence of physical card.
