Card class: Non-HeroCategory: Keyword Performance

At a glance

Long-Tail Analysis compares your specific, multi-word, lower-volume queries against the broad head terms, using query data from Search Console’s Performance report. The bar view shows how much of your organic visibility comes from the long tail, the part of the curve that is cheaper to win, higher in intent, and most resilient to AI Overview cannibalisation.

What it tracks

This card buckets queries by length and specificity, then compares impressions and clicks across the head, body, and long-tail segments drawn from the Search Analytics API. Long-tail queries (typically four or more words, or a clear single intent like “waterproof hiking boots size 9 womens”) convert better than head terms because they capture searchers further down the funnel. A site that earns most of its clicks from a handful of head terms is fragile: one ranking shift can wipe out a large share of traffic. A site with a broad, healthy long tail is diversified and harder to disrupt. Read this alongside New Query Rate to see whether your long tail is growing, and CTR Opportunity Queries to find under-performing long-tail rows worth optimising. A rising long-tail share is usually a sign of maturing content depth. A shrinking long tail against a stable head means thinner topical coverage, often after content pruning went too far.

Reconciling against the source

Approximate this in Search Console, Performance, Search results by exporting the Queries table and segmenting by word count yourself; totals should align allowing for the 1,000-row UI cap, anonymisation of rare queries, and the usual 2 to 3 day delay.
