Card class: Non-HeroCategory: AI Search Trends

At a glance

New Query Rate plots, over time, the proportion of your search queries each period that are brand new (queries you had not received before). A rising line means your organic footprint is broadening into fresh topics and long-tail phrasing; a flat or falling line means your discovery surface is stagnating. It is a leading indicator of topical reach and, increasingly, of how AI-style natural-language search is matching new phrasings to your pages.

What it tracks

For each period the card divides the count of newly appearing queries by the total query count, then charts that rate as a line so you can see the trend rather than a single snapshot. A healthy, growing site tends to keep introducing new long-tail and conversational queries as content expands and as Google’s language matching widens, which is why this sits in the AI Search Trends category: the rise of natural-language and AI-assisted search drives a steady stream of novel, longer phrasings. A sustained drop in the rate can signal that content output has slowed, that competitors are capturing emerging terms first, or that a ranking decline has shrunk the spread of queries you surface for. Track it alongside the raw New Queries table to move from “how much is the mix expanding” to “which specific terms are new”. Remember Search Console anonymises rare queries, so the true count of ultra-niche newcomers is always slightly understated.

Reconciling against the source

There is no single native field for this in Search Console; rebuild it by exporting the Performance report’s query list for consecutive periods, counting how many queries are new each period, and dividing by the total, which is what the card automates. Note Search Console data is typically 2 to 3 days delayed, rare queries are anonymised, and the UI caps at 1,000 rows, all of which slightly understate the new-query share.
