Card class: Non-HeroCategory: Ranking Analysis

At a glance

Position Change is a table that shows how your average organic-search position has moved between two periods, broken down by row (typically per query or per page). A negative change is good because position is climbing toward 1, while a positive change means you have slipped down the results. It turns the static ranking snapshot into a movers-and-fallers list.

What it tracks

This card compares the average position metric from the Google Search Console Search Analytics API across two windows and reports the delta per row. Each row is a query or page, with its prior position, current position and the change between them. Because lower positions are better, the card flags improvements as rankings that moved from, say, 12.4 to 8.1 (a change of minus 4.3) and declines as rankings that moved the other way. The value of a per-row change table is that it isolates what actually moved underneath a flat headline. Your site-wide average position can look stable while a cluster of important pages quietly slips and a different cluster rises. The biggest negative movers are wins to understand and replicate; the biggest positive movers (drops) are the early signals of a content, technical or competitive problem worth triaging before it costs clicks. Watch out for low-impression rows: a query seen only a handful of times can swing by many positions on noise alone, so weight movements by impression volume. Pair this card with Position Trend, Declining Queries, Rising Queries, Queries Dropping from Top 10 and Ranking Volatility.

Reconciling against the source

In Search Console, Performance, Search results, tick Average position, then use the Compare date mode to set two periods and read the per-query or per-page deltas. Search Console data is typically 2 to 3 days delayed, anonymises rare queries and the UI caps at 1,000 rows, so small-volume movers may show different figures from the API-driven table here.
